SMARTY JONES WINS KENTUCKY DERBY
Post-Victory Local Media Coverage

Smarty Jones, a Philadelphia-based horse jockeyed by Stewart Elliott, won the 130th running of the Kentucky Derby Saturday, doing for this city what the Eagles and the Phillies and the 76ers couldn’t, and the Flyers now hope to pull off, and leading to, among other things, more media coverage.

In the Philadelphia Inquirer: “Smarty’s Trainer Lingers with Ghosts of Derby Lore,” by Bob Ford; and “Smarty Jones Coming Home; Handlers Plot Preakness Plan,” by Mike Jensen.

In the Philadelphia Daily News: “Finest From Philly,” by Dick Jerardi; “Elliott Answers the Cynics,” also by Jerardi; “A Champ We Can Call Our Own,” also by Jerardi; and “Smarty’s Coming Home a Hero,” by Myung Oak Kim.

The next leg of the Triple Crown is the 129th running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course, Baltimore, on May 15, to be followed by the 136th Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park, Elmont, N.Y., on June 5.

I know, I know, it’s just a horse. Just one horse. But I’m writing this from Philadelphia. When it comes to professional sports, at this point, we’ll take anything we can get.
